Family & People Portraits, Hand-Painted From Your Photos

We paint people by hand from your photographs — families, couples, children, grandparents, memorial portraits, and people with their animals — in acrylic or oil on canvas, or charcoal, watercolour and pencil on paper, with a digital proof before anything ships.

Group portraits can be built from several photographs. Skin is painted in thin, warm layers with cool halftones so it reads as skin; darker skin tones are a specialty and our photo guide explains how to light them.

Combining photographs into one portrait

  1. 01

You send the photographs — one per person is enough, more helps — and tell us who goes where.

  2. 02

We draft the arrangement: scale, eye lines, lighting direction and clothing, and send a sketch.

  3. 03

You approve or adjust the sketch. Only then does painting start.

  4. 04

The finished painting is photographed under even and raking light and sent as a proof.

  5. 05

You approve; we varnish, frame if ordered, crate and ship.

People portrait FAQ

Can you add someone who has passed away to a family portrait?

Yes. A grandparent, a parent or a sibling can be painted into a group from a separate, older photograph, matched for scale, age as you wish, and lighting. We send a sketch of the arrangement before painting and are careful and unhurried about it.

How do you paint skin so it looks like skin?

In thin, warm layers with the cool halftones left visible at the temples, the jaw and around the eyes. Skin painted as one flat warm colour looks like plastic; painted as warm and cool light over form, it looks alive. Darker skin tones are painted with the same range and need a photo in even light — see our photo guide.

Do you paint from old or damaged photographs?

Yes. Scanned prints, faded snapshots and damaged photographs are our daily work for memorial portraits. Send what you have; we tell you what detail level it supports before you commit.

How is a group portrait priced?

By size, number of subjects and detail level. A three-person group at 24 × 36 in is quoted differently from a single head study; we send a written quote before anything starts.

Do you paint people for photographers and businesses?

Yes. Wedding and portrait photographers order painted portraits from their own frames at trade pricing from one piece, one image or a season of them. See the trade page for photographers.
