Impressionist Style Paintings From Your Photo
An impressionist painting is built from marks rather than from edges: the form comes together at a distance and breaks into strokes and colour when you walk up to it.
- What it looks like
- Broken colour, visible strokes, soft edges; light described rather than detail
- Best for
- Gardens, views, horses in movement, pets with long coats, informal portraits
- Detail level
- Usually Painterly — the brush is meant to stay visible
- Mediums
- Acrylic or oil on canvas; watercolour on paper for the lightest version
- What it is not
- A quicker or cheaper way to paint — the marks have to be right first time
This is the style for people who do not want a photograph in paint. The picture is made of marks, and the marks stay visible.
How it differs from realistic work
A realistic painting describes: this hair, that highlight, that fold. An impressionist painting states: a warm mass here, a cool one against it, a dark note at the eye. Stand back and the form assembles itself; stand close and it comes apart into paint.
That is not a shortcut. The marks have to be in the right place and the right colour the first time, because reworking them is what turns this style to mud. It takes a different kind of confidence than a tight finish does.
What it suits
Light and movement. A garden at dusk, water, a horse at a gallop, a long-coated dog in sunlight, a view someone came home from. For a memorial portrait where every feature matters, realistic at the Refined or Hyperreal level is usually the better answer.
Choosing the medium
Acrylic and oil both work. Watercolour on paper gives the lightest version of this style and the quickest — worth asking about if the piece is a gift rather than a wall anchor. See mediums for how each one ships.

Impressionist portraits FAQ
Is impressionist the same as the Painterly detail level?
They overlap but are not the same. Painterly describes how far any painting is taken — the brush stays visible. Impressionist describes how the picture is conceived: colour broken into separate marks, edges softened, light treated as the subject. An impressionist piece is almost always Painterly, but a realistic portrait can be Painterly too.
Will my dog still look like my dog?
Yes. The likeness is carried by the drawing underneath and by a few decisive marks at the eyes and muzzle. What goes is the hair-by-hair description — at arm's length it reads clearly, and up close you see paint.
What subjects suit this style best?
Anything where light and movement matter more than detail: a garden, a view, water, a horse at a gallop, a long-coated dog in sunlight. It suits a bright reference photo far better than a dim one.
Can I ask for impressionist at the Hyperreal level?
No, and we would talk you out of it. The two pull in opposite directions — Hyperreal closes the strokes up until they disappear, which is exactly what this style is not. If you want both detail and visible paint, Refined in a realistic style is usually what you actually mean.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
