Painting a Labrador Retriever: what we pay attention to
A Labrador’s coat is short and lies flat, so there is nowhere to hide: the painting has to describe the skull, the cheek muscle and the broad chest through the direction of the strokes. We paint the coat in short, overlapping marks that follow the muscle underneath, and keep the edges of the form soft where the fur turns away from the light.
The face is what owners look at first. Labradors carry their kindness in the brow and the slightly dropped corner of the mouth; we keep the eyes their true colour — dark brown on blacks and yellows, hazel or amber on chocolates — and place the catchlight exactly where your photo has it. The nose is painted as a single wet, thick highlight on a matte dark shape.
Colour is decided by the dog, not the breed. Black Labs are painted as colour — ultramarine and umber darks with warm passages where the light wraps around — and yellow Labs as a range from cream to fox-red rather than a flat “yellow”. Chocolate Labs are kept warm throughout so they never read as black in a dim room. If you have a working dog, a photo with a dummy or a bird in the mouth makes a strong landscape-format piece.

Labrador Retriever portrait FAQ
Can you paint a black Labrador so it does not look like a dark blob?
Yes — it is the most common request we get for the breed. Black fur is painted as a range of cool blue-blacks and warm brown-blacks, with highlights placed along the direction of the coat over the skull, cheeks and shoulder. Send a photo in soft light and the painting will show a dog with form, not a cut-out.
My Lab is a chocolate — will the colour come out right?
Yes. Chocolate Labs are painted from warm umber darks up to a milk-chocolate highlight, keeping the coat warm rather than drifting toward black. The eye colour — usually hazel or amber on a chocolate — is matched from your photo.
Can you paint two Labs from separate photos?
Yes. Two or three Labs from separate references are arranged at a consistent scale and lit from the same side; we send a sketch of the layout before painting.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
