Custom Small Pet Portraits, Hand-Painted From Your Photo

We paint rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, chinchillas, hedgehogs, bearded dragons and tortoises by hand from your photo.

Small pets are painted at a scale that gives them presence — a rabbit's head fills a canvas the way a dog's would. The pages below note what matters for each: the velvet of a rabbit's ear, the rosettes of an Abyssinian guinea pig, the scales of a bearded dragon.

Small pets: portraits by type

Each page explains what we pay attention to when painting that type, which compositions work, and how to photograph them. Not listed? Send the photo anyway.

How we paint small pets

What matters on the canvas

Scale and presence

We compose small animals large. A head-and-shoulders view on a modest canvas turns a hamster into a portrait sitter rather than a snapshot. Backgrounds are kept plain so nothing competes with a small face.

Fur, spines and scales

Rabbit and chinchilla fur is painted as dense velvet with soft edges; guinea pig rosettes as radiating strokes; hedgehog spines as a mass with a few individual quills at the edge; reptile scales as a pattern that follows the body's form, with the eye and mouth as focal points.

Photo tips

Photographing small pets for a portrait

  • Photograph on a plain surface at the animal's eye level, in daylight.
  • Use burst mode — small pets move constantly and one frame will have sharp eyes.
  • Fill the frame; a tiny animal in a big photo loses detail when we zoom in.

Small pets portrait FAQ

Can you paint a rabbit or guinea pig that has passed away?

Yes. Memorial portraits of small pets are common and often painted from a few casual phone photos. Send everything you have and we will tell you what detail level they support.

Do you paint reptiles and other unusual pets?

Yes — bearded dragons, tortoises, geckos, snakes and anything else you keep. If it is not listed, send the photo; the same painters, proof step and trade pricing apply.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
