Hand-Painted Portraits for Gift Shops & Small Galleries
A hand-painted portrait in the window brings people in, and a “commission your own” sign beside it turns them into customers. What has made this hard for small shops is the economics of art wholesale: minimums built for chains, and originals that sit on the wall as tied-up cash.
Our trade program lets you test the category with one piece, at trade price, and grow from there by commission rather than stock. The sample is discounted, the ongoing price is trade from the first order, and every commissioned painting is proofed before it ships.
Two ways shops run it
Commission service: a sample on the wall, a photo taken at the counter, an order forwarded to us. The customer collects a framed original a few weeks later, or has it shipped to their door in your packaging.
Decor to order: a small rotation of animal subjects — highland cows, hares, horses, retrievers — painted in sizes and palettes you choose, reordered as they sell. No pallet, no guesswork, no unsold canvas through the summer.
The problem
What usually gets in the way
-
Testing a category should not mean buying a pallet
You want to see whether hand-painted portraits sell in your shop, not commit to fifty of them. Art wholesalers price for volume; small first orders either are not allowed or are not economic.
-
Originals tie up cash on the wall
Ready-made paintings are a guess about what customers want. The one that sells is the one you did not order enough of; the rest sit there through two seasons.
-
Customers want their own pet, not a generic one
A painting of somebody's Labrador is decor. A painting of their Labrador is a purchase. But taking commissions means managing artists — and most shops do not have the time.
How we handle it
What we do about it
-
One piece at trade, to test the category
Order a single sample piece at the discounted rate, hang it, and see the reaction. Trade pricing continues from one piece thereafter, so the test never has to turn into a stock commitment.
-
Commission to order, hold nothing
Take the order and the photo at the counter or online, send it to us, and the finished painting ships to you or to the customer unbranded. Your shop sells the service; we supply the painting.
-
Decor pieces for the wall, made to order
Highland cows, hares, horses and dogs as decor subjects are painted to order in your chosen sizes and palette. Order what sold, when it sold.

Proof of hand
Real paint, real brushstrokes
Every piece is completed by one painter from start to finish — no assembly line. Below: a close-up crop of a finished painting, and a painter at work. Every image on this site is a photograph of real hand-painted work.
FAQ for gift shops & galleries
What should our first sample be?
Something that stops people at the window: a mid-size dog or highland cow head study at the Refined level, framed simply. We can suggest a subject and palette to suit your shop.
Do you provide point-of-sale material?
We supply process images, a raking-light photo and a short explanation of the proof step that you can print or display beside the sample. Keep it in your own branding; nothing needs to mention us.
Can customers order through our website?
Yes. Take the order and photo through your site, forward it to us, and we proof to you before shipping. Many shops list two sizes and two detail levels to keep the choice simple.
Can a gallery sell your paintings under its own name?
Trade orders ship unbranded and we never publish them. How you present the work — as a commissioned service or under your gallery's name — is your decision.
