Acrylic Portraits — Hand-Painted on Canvas From Your Photo
Acrylic on canvas is what we paint in unless you ask for something else: artist-grade lightfast colour, the same painters and the same eight stages, and paint that dries in hours rather than weeks — so a portrait can be proofed and shipped without waiting on a cure.

Acrylic is oil’s faster sibling. The painters, the drawing, the underpainting, the layers and the proof are the same; the difference is that acrylic paint dries in hours, so a finished portrait can be photographed for its proof, varnished and packed days sooner than an oil painting, which must cure first. When a portrait has a date to meet — a Christmas delivery, an anniversary, a wedding gift — acrylic is usually what we suggest.
What it looks like
Close to oil at normal viewing distance. Acrylic dries slightly flatter and a touch cooler, and because it sets quickly the blending in skin and fur is a little crisper. Painted at the Refined or Hyperreal level it has the same detail as oil; at the Painterly level its fast-drying layers give a lively, direct surface that suits decor pieces and volume trade orders.
Durability and care
Artist-grade acrylics are lightfast and stable, and a matte or satin acrylic varnish protects the surface. Care is the same as for oil: out of direct sun, away from heat, no water.
When to choose acrylic
- A delivery date within reach that oil’s curing time would put at risk.
- Trade orders where turnaround matters more than the last degree of depth.
- Larger decor pieces at the Painterly level.
For everything else, oil remains the default. Both ship rolled or crated, both are priced by size, subjects, detail level and medium, and both are available to trade buyers from one piece.
Proof of hand
Real paint, real brushstrokes
Every piece is completed by one painter from start to finish — no assembly line. Below: a close-up crop of a finished painting, and a painter at work. Every image on this site is a photograph of real hand-painted work.
Acrylic portraits FAQ
Does acrylic look different from oil?
Close, not identical. Acrylic dries slightly flatter and cooler, and the blending in faces is a little crisper because the paint sets faster. At normal viewing distance most people cannot tell; side by side, oil has slightly more depth.
Is acrylic cheaper?
Price is set by size, number of subjects, detail level and medium; acrylic sits close to oil because the painting time is the same. What it saves is calendar time, not painter time.
Does acrylic last?
Yes. Artist-grade acrylics are lightfast and stable, and an acrylic varnish protects the surface. It has been a museum-collected medium for seventy years.
Can I have acrylic at the Hyperreal level?
Yes. All three detail levels are painted in acrylic; Hyperreal takes as long as it does in oil.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
