Painting a Thoroughbred: what we pay attention to
Thoroughbreds are painted as athletes. The long neck, the sloping shoulder, the deep girth, the clean, hard legs and the intelligent, slightly wary eye are measured from your photo at the drawing stage, because owners and trainers see a wrong angle in the shoulder or a soft pastern at once. A side-on photo at chest height with the legs clearly placed is the reference for a conformation portrait.
The coat is fine and glossy, and the painting is about sheen over muscle: bays in warm mahogany with black points and cool, sharp highlights; chestnuts from copper to liver; greys as soft-edged dapples with the dark skin at the muzzle; blacks as colour. The mane and tail are painted in a few long, loaded strokes rather than hair by hair, which keeps them alive.
Racehorses are painted in silks, with a number cloth or a winner’s rug if you want the story told; ex-racehorses in their second careers with the tack of the job they do now. A standing profile on a landscape canvas is the classic racing-yard piece; a head study with a plain bridle is the portrait most owners choose for the house.
Scenes and settings
What do people have us paint a Thoroughbred doing?
Fine-skinned, long-limbed and hot. The skin is thin enough that veins show on the neck and face, which makes the head one of the best things in horse painting. Many are photographed either in work at dawn or long retired in a field.
Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Thoroughbred alone, or with the people the Thoroughbred belongs to.
-
In the string at dawn
Walking out in a line, rugs on, breath visible, light low. A wide landscape canvas painted cool, with the horses as dark masses and the sky doing the work.
-
The veined head
Close crop where the veins stand on the cheek and the skin shows every bone beneath. Painted with the veins as soft raised ridges rather than drawn lines, which is the difference between thin skin and a diagram.
-
In racing colours
Jockey up, silks bright, horse on its toes. Painted with the silks at full saturation and the horse kept subtler, so the colours read the way they do from the rail.
-
Retired, in a field
Older, rounder, grazing, rug on. A gentle painting and often the one people actually want — the horse after the job, not during it.
-
Being washed off
Water running down the coat, sweat marks, steam coming off. Wet coat is painted darker and shinier with the anatomy suddenly fully visible.

Thoroughbred portrait FAQ
Can you paint a racehorse in racing colours?
Yes. Silks, a bridle, a number cloth or a winner's rug are painted from your photos. Tell us what to include; many owners want the horse itself with a plain bridle.
Do you paint ex-racehorses in their second careers?
Yes — eventers, hunters and hacks that started on the track are painted as they are now, with the tack of their current job or none at all.
How do you paint a bay coat?
As warm mahogany and red-brown with black points, and with sharp, cool highlights along the muscle where the sheen catches the light. The black of the legs and mane is painted as colour, not as a flat dark.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
