Painting a Cockatoo: what we pay attention to
A white cockatoo is painted in colour, the way a white dog is: warm creams where the light strikes the head and the breast, cool blue-greys in the shadow under the wing and inside the crest, and pure white saved for a few highlights. A ground a step darker than the bird keeps the outline without a hard edge, and the dark eye and the grey beak are painted crisply so the face reads at once.
The crest is the drama of the breed and can be painted raised — a yellow fan on a sulphur-crested, a white umbrella, a salmon spray on a Moluccan — or down, as the calm, everyday bird. Raised, it needs headroom on the canvas, and we compose for it. The feathers are painted in groups with individual feathers drawn in the crest and at the wing tips.
Galahs and pink cockatoos are painted with the pink warm and soft against cool grey wings. The expression of a cockatoo — curious, demanding, slightly unhinged — is kept exactly as your photo has it.

Cockatoo portrait FAQ
How do you paint white feathers?
In colour — warm creams where the light strikes, cool blue-greys in the shadow under the wing and the crest — with pure white saved for the highlights. A ground a step darker keeps the outline.
Crest up or down?
Your choice. Crest up is dramatic and needs headroom on the canvas; crest down is the calm, everyday bird. Send photos of both if you have them.
Do you paint galahs and pink cockatoos?
Yes. The pink is painted warm and soft with the grey wings cool, and the pale eye ring drawn from your photo.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
