Painting a Lovebird: what we pay attention to
Lovebirds are painted as pairs more often than any other bird, and at two to three times life size, so that two small birds fill a square canvas and the peach face, the white eye ring and the bright green of the plumage each get their detail. From one photo or from separate ones, the pair is arranged on a perch at a consistent scale and the layout confirmed with you as a sketch.
The plumage is painted in feather groups with the strongest colour on the plane facing the light and cooler, deeper versions in the shadow. Peach-faced birds are kept warm at the face and clean green at the body; Fischer’s and masked lovebirds have their orange and their dark hoods matched from a daylight photo; blues, lutinos and pieds are painted as they are.
The eye is tiny and is painted last with a fine brush. The manner of a lovebird — bold, bossy, affectionate — comes through in the pose, and we keep whatever your photo shows.
