Painting a German Shepherd: what we pay attention to
A German Shepherd portrait is judged by owners the way a horse portrait is judged by riders: on structure. The set of the ears, the length of the muzzle, the slope of the back and the angle of the hocks are measured against your photo at the drawing stage, and the sketch is where we get the likeness right before any colour goes on.
The coat is painted as two surfaces. The black saddle is built from cool, low-chroma darks, with the fur direction shown through highlights along the spine and shoulder; the tan is warm and opaque, catching light on the cheeks, chest and legs. Where saddle meets tan, the edge is feathered so it reads as fur, not as a painted-on pattern. Sables are painted with banded tips at the edge of the mass.
The expression matters as much as the structure. Shepherds have an intelligent, watchful look — ears forward, eyes slightly narrowed — and we keep it, without hardening it. Many of the Shepherds we paint are memorial pieces for dogs that served as working, police or family dogs, often from a mix of older photos; we tell you honestly what the references will support.

How do you paint the black saddle and the tan points?
As two different surfaces. The black is painted with cool, low-chroma darks that let the fur direction show through highlights; the tan with warm, opaque strokes that catch the light on the cheeks and legs. Where the two meet, the transition is feathered, never a hard edge.
Can you paint a working or protection dog in harness?
Yes. Harnesses, collars, leads and service vests are painted from your photos. Many owners prefer no equipment so the dog itself is the subject; either is fine.
Do you paint long-coated Shepherds and sables?
Yes. Long-coat dogs are painted with the feathering built in layers like a Golden Retriever; sables are painted hair by hair at the tips where the banding shows, and as a mass elsewhere.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
