Painting a Poodle: what we pay attention to
A Poodle’s coat is the whole design problem. Curls cannot be painted one by one — a dog painted that way looks like a bath sponge — so we mass the coat as shapes of light and shadow, decide where the light catches the outer edge of each mass, and then draw a handful of individual curls exactly there: the crown of the topknot, the fringe of the ears, the outline against the background.
Colour is subtler than it looks. A white Poodle is painted with warm and cool greys in the shadows so it keeps its volume; a black Poodle needs side light in the photo and is painted with blue-black and umber darks so the curls read as texture; apricots and reds are kept warm and are prone to going orange if the reference is shot in evening light, so we correct from a daylight photo where possible.
The face beneath the coat is fine and long-muzzled, with dark, almond eyes set close. Standard Poodles suit a full standing profile on a landscape canvas — the breed’s outline is elegant and owners of show dogs often want it — while Miniatures and Toys are usually painted as head studies. Tell us the clip you want in the painting, and send photos taken in that clip.

Poodle portrait FAQ
How do you paint curls without painting every one?
Curls are massed as shapes of light and shadow first, then a few individual curls are drawn at the edges — the outline of the topknot, the edge of the ear — where the eye expects them. Painting every curl makes the dog look like a sponge.
Which clip should I choose for the portrait?
The one your dog wears most; it is how you recognise them. If you keep a show clip for the ring and a short clip at home, send photos of both and we will discuss which suits the composition.
Can you paint a Doodle from this page?
Doodles are painted with the same curl technique, but they have their own pages — see Goldendoodle and Labradoodle — because the head shape and coat vary more.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
