Painting a Abyssinian: what we pay attention to
The Abyssinian looks like a small wild cat, and the portrait keeps that: large ears set wide, an alert almond eye with dark eyeliner and light spectacles, a lithe body that is never quite still. We draw the head from a three-quarter photo — the angle that shows the ears and the profile — and keep the wild, interested expression exactly as the photo has it.
The ticked coat is painted with banded strokes, each carrying the light and dark bands of the hair, so the coat shimmers instead of reading as a flat brown. A ruddy Aby runs from warm apricot at the chin and belly to a deep, ticked brown along the back; sorrels are copper; blues and fawns are cooler and softer. We paint that range from a daylight photo and choose a cool ground so the warmth glows.
A three-quarter head-and-shoulders study is the classic; a full body alert on a landscape canvas shows the athletic outline of a cat that is always about to jump.

Abyssinian portrait FAQ
How do you paint a ticked coat?
As banded strokes: each stroke carries the light and dark bands of the hair so the coat shimmers rather than reading as a flat colour. Individual hairs are painted only at the edges of the form.
Will the coat look warm enough?
Yes. A ruddy Aby runs from a warm apricot at the chin and belly to a deep, ticked brown along the back, and we paint that range from a daylight photo against a cool ground so the warmth glows.
Do you paint the eyeliner and the M?
Yes. The dark eyeliner lines, the light "spectacles" around the eyes and the faint M on the forehead are part of the face and are drawn at the sketch stage.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
