Painting a Birman: what we pay attention to

Birmans are painted for their gloves and their eyes. The white gloves on the front paws and the laces up the back of the hind legs are drawn at the sketch stage so the edges fall exactly where they do on your cat, and painted as white fur with cool shadows against the darker point colour. The eyes are a deep, even blue and are painted as glass — translucent layers over a lighter base, a sharp catchlight — from a daylight photo.

The point pattern is mapped first — the mask, the ears, the legs and the tail in seal, blue, chocolate or lilac — and the semi-long, silky coat is painted through it in soft layers with the ruff as a soft mass. The body colour is kept pale and warm with the golden cast most Birmans carry.

The head is rounded with a Roman nose and a sweet, composed expression. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a pale ground is the classic; a full body seated with the paws forward shows the gloves, which is what Birman owners want to see.

Birman portrait FAQ

How do you paint the gloves and laces?

They are drawn at the sketch stage so the edges fall exactly where they do on your cat — symmetrical gloves on the front paws, laces up the back of the hind legs — and painted as white fur with cool shadows against the point colour.

Will the eyes be the right blue?

Yes — matched from a daylight photo and painted as translucent glass with a sharp catchlight. Birman blue is usually a deep, even sapphire.

How is a Birman different from a Ragdoll on canvas?

The Birman is a little smaller, with a rounder head, a Roman nose and the white gloves; the Ragdoll is larger with a flatter-planed head. We draw the head from your photo and the difference shows.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
