Painting a Devon Rex: what we pay attention to
The Devon Rex is a pixie — huge, low-set ears, a short muzzle, large eyes and a slightly mischievous look — and the portrait is built around that face. We draw the head from your photo with the ears in full, because they are the outline of the breed and are easily cropped in photographs, and compose straight on with the ears filling the top of a square canvas.
The coat is short, soft and wavy, and it is painted as a rippled surface — alternating light and shadow along the body where the waves catch the light — rather than as individual hairs. Where the coat is sparse, the warm skin is painted showing through. Any colour or pattern is matched from a daylight photo.
The expression is the reason people love the breed: alert, curious, a little impish. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study is the classic; a full body perched or curled shows the slender, elfin outline. Cornish Rex cats are painted the same way with their longer, egg-shaped head.

Devon Rex portrait FAQ
How do you paint the wavy coat?
As a soft, rippled surface — the waves shown as alternating light and shadow along the body — rather than as individual hairs. Sparse areas are painted as warm skin showing through.
Will the ears fit?
We compose for them. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study with the ears filling the top of a square canvas is the composition that suits the breed.
Do you paint the Cornish Rex too?
Yes. The Cornish has a longer, egg-shaped head and a tighter, more uniform wave, and is drawn from your photo.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
