Painting a Exotic Shorthair: what we pay attention to
The Exotic Shorthair is a Persian with the coat taken down, and the painting is about the face: round, flat, with full cheeks, a tiny nose, small ears set wide and large round eyes. Because the short, plush coat shows the head’s shape directly, the drawing has to be exact — we measure the width of the cheeks and the set of the eyes from a straight-on photo at the sketch stage.
The coat is painted as a dense, plush edge with soft strokes that follow the round forms. Any Persian colour applies: whites with warm and cool greys in the shadows, blues as cool colour with silver highlights, tabbies mapped and painted through, points with the pattern drawn at the sketch. Copper eyes on solids are glazed to keep them luminous; blue eyes on points are painted as glass.
The expression is calm and slightly grumpy in a way owners love, and it is painted as your photo has it. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a square canvas is the composition.

Exotic Shorthair portrait FAQ
How is an Exotic different from a Persian on canvas?
The coat. The face is the same round, flat Persian face, but the short plush coat shows its shape directly, so the drawing of the head has to be exact — the cheeks, the small ears, the tiny nose.
Will tear staining show?
Only if you want it to. Tell us at order; we confirm on the proof.
The face is very flat — will it look right?
Yes. We draw the head as your photo shows it and paint the planes of the flat face as soft forms, with the eyes at their true size and width.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
