Painting a Sphynx: what we pay attention to
The Sphynx is the one cat we paint like a person. There is no coat to describe, so the painting is about skin: thin, warm layers with cool halftones at the temples, the folds and the edge of the ears, and the wrinkles painted as forms with a lit and a shaded side. The fine down that covers the body is suggested as a soft edge where the form turns away from the light.
The ears are enormous and are the outline of the breed; the eyes are lemon-shaped and set wide; the belly is round. We draw all of it carefully from your photo and do not soften the oddness — a Sphynx painted “prettier” is not a Sphynx. Skin colour and pattern — pink, grey, black, tortie, pointed, bicolour — show through and are matched from a daylight photo.
Warm, soft light in the reference does most of the work. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a cool ground, the ears filling the top of the frame and the wrinkled forehead as the subject, is the composition that suits the breed.

Sphynx portrait FAQ
How do you paint skin instead of fur?
As skin — thin warm layers with cool halftones at the temples and the folds, the way a human portrait is painted. The wrinkles are forms with a lit and a shaded side, and the fine down is suggested as a soft edge.
What colour is my Sphynx on canvas?
The colour in a daylight photo — pinks, greys, black, tortie and pointed patterns show on the skin and are painted as they are. Warm light in the photo helps.
Will the painting flatter or exaggerate the wrinkles?
Neither. We paint the skin as your photo shows it, with the folds as forms; the breed's oddness is its beauty and we do not soften it.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
