Painting a Tabby Cat: what we pay attention to
A tabby is structure before it is colour. The M on the forehead, the eyeliner lines, the symmetrical stripes on the cheeks, the swirls or bars on the flanks and the rings on the tail are mapped at the sketch stage as soft-edged shapes, and then the fur is painted through them in the direction of growth. That order — pattern first, fur through it — is what makes the stripes wrap around the cat instead of sitting on top like a decal.
Brown tabbies are painted warm, with the ground colour running from a warm grey-brown to apricot at the cheeks and the stripes in deep umber; grey and blue tabbies cooler; silvers with a pale, cool ground and black pattern. White bibs and paws are drawn at the sketch and painted with cool shadows so they sit in the coat.
The eyes are usually green, gold or hazel and are glazed to glow inside the pattern. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study shows the symmetry of the forehead and cheeks; a loaf on a square canvas shows the pattern wrapping the body.

How do you paint the stripes so they look like fur?
The pattern is mapped first as soft-edged shapes, then the fur is painted through it in the direction of growth, so the stripes wrap around the head and body. Hard-edged stripes painted on top of the fur are why many tabby portraits look like decals.
Classic, mackerel or spotted — does it matter?
For the drawing, yes. Classic swirls, mackerel stripes and spots are mapped from your photo at the sketch stage; the painting technique is the same.
My tabby has white patches — is that a problem?
No. White bibs, paws and blazes are drawn at the sketch stage and painted with cool shadows so they sit in the coat.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
