Painting a Tortoiseshell Cat: what we pay attention to
Tortoiseshell coats are the most intricate we paint, and the way through them is to paint fur before pattern. The broad areas of black and orange are mapped at the sketch stage — the split face, the blaze, the patches on the flanks — and then the fur is painted through them with strokes that carry both colours where they intermingle, so the brindling reads as a coat with direction and depth rather than as speckles on a surface.
The black is painted as colour, cool in the shadow and warm where the light wraps; the orange in three temperatures from cream to red-brown; and the tabby markings that often show in the orange are painted through. Dilute torties — grey and cream — are painted cooler and softer with the same approach. Side light in the reference shows the mottling as texture.
The face is the portrait: a blaze of orange down one side, a patch over an eye, and eyes — usually gold or green — that are the calm point in a busy coat. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study shows it; a loaf on a square canvas shows the whole pattern. Torties have “tortitude”, and we paint the expression exactly as your photo has it.

Tortoiseshell Cat portrait FAQ
How do you paint a brindled coat?
As fur first. The broad areas of black and orange are mapped, then the fur is painted through them with strokes that carry both colours where they intermingle, so the mottling reads as a coat rather than as speckles.
Will the orange blaze on the face be in the right place?
Yes. The face pattern — a blaze, a split, a patch over one eye — is drawn from your photo at the sketch stage and confirmed on the proof.
Do you paint dilute torties?
Yes. Grey and cream torties are painted cooler and softer with the same approach.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
