Painting a Tuxedo Cat: what we pay attention to
Tuxedo cats are painted as two surfaces that meet in fur. The black is painted as colour — cool blue-blacks in the shadow, warm brown-blacks where the light wraps the skull — with the fur direction shown in the highlights; the white bib, chin and paws are painted with warm and cool greys in the shadows so they stay in the form rather than floating on top. Where the two meet, the edge is feathered so it reads as fur, not as a hard line.
The markings themselves are the likeness. The shape of the mask, the blaze down the nose, the exact line of the bib and the height of the socks are your cat’s alone, and they are drawn from your photo at the sketch stage; a lopsided blaze stays lopsided. The eyes — green, gold or copper — are the colour in a black-and-white painting and are glazed to glow.
A mid-tone ground with some colour in it keeps both the black and the white edges. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study is the classic; a full body seated shows the tuxedo arrangement of bib and paws.

Tuxedo Cat portrait FAQ
How do you paint black and white together?
As two surfaces with a soft edge. The black is painted as colour — cool and warm darks with the fur direction in the highlights — and the white with warm and cool greys in the shadows so it stays in the form. Where they meet, the edge is feathered so it reads as fur.
My cat's markings are lopsided — will you keep that?
Yes. The exact shape of the blaze, the mask and the bib is your cat, and it is drawn from your photo at the sketch stage. We never tidy a pattern.
What background suits a tuxedo?
A mid-tone with some colour — a muted green, a warm grey, an ochre — so both the black and the white hold their edges.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
