Painting a Bernese Mountain Dog: what we pay attention to

A Berner is a tricolour puzzle solved at the sketch stage: the white blaze, the white cross on the chest, the rust eyebrows, cheeks and legs, and the black everywhere else are drawn in first so the edges fall correctly on the skull and body. Then the coat is painted in layers — the black built from cool and warm darks with the waves shown as highlights, the rust warm and opaque, the white with grey shadows so it sits in the coat rather than on top.

The long coat needs the same layering as a Golden’s, only dark: a soft mass first, then the longer hair of the ruff, britches and tail added where it catches the light. Bright, soft light in the photo makes this possible; a Berner photographed in harsh sun becomes a black shape with a white stripe.

The breed’s face is broad, gentle and slightly amused. A three-quarter head-and-shoulders study on a cool, misty ground is the composition we recommend; a full body lying down on a landscape canvas shows the whole pattern and is a favourite for memorial portraits of a breed that never lives long enough.

Bernese Mountain Dog portrait FAQ

How do you paint a black coat that is also long and wavy?

In layers, like a Golden but dark. The black is built from cool and warm darks with the waves shown as highlights along the top of each mass, and the longer hair of the ruff and britches is added last where it catches the light.

Will the white blaze and chest look right against the black?

Yes. The white is painted with warm and cool greys in the shadows so it sits in the coat, and the edges where black meets white are feathered so they read as fur. The rust between the two is kept warm.

Do you paint puppies?

Yes. Berner puppies are a popular commission — the pattern is already there and the proportions are different. Send a sharp photo at the puppy's eye level.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
