Painting a Bichon Frise: what we pay attention to
A Bichon is a cloud with a face, and the portrait depends on both halves. The coat is painted in colour — warm creams where the light strikes the top of the head, cool blue-greys in the shadow under the chin and inside the legs, pure white saved for the highlights — with the curls massed as soft shapes and a few individual curls drawn where they cross the background. A ground a step darker than the coat keeps the outline.
The face is three dark shapes in the white: round black eyes, a black nose and black lips. We paint them crisply so the expression reads at once, and take care with the eyelids so the look is bright and cheerful rather than startled. The rounded show head and the shorter pet cut are both painted from your photos, whichever your dog wears.
At near life size on a square canvas — the round outline suits it — the Bichon becomes a serious little portrait. The plumed tail over the back completes a full-body composition.

How do you paint a white curly dog?
In colour. The coat is painted in warm creams and cool blue-greys with pure white for the highlights, and the curls are massed as shapes with a few drawn at the edges. A background a step darker keeps the outline.
Will the painting look like a cloud with a face?
That is the breed, painted well. The dark, round eyes, the black nose and the black lips are painted crisply so the face reads at once inside the soft coat.
Do you paint the show trim or the pet trim?
Whichever your dog wears. The rounded show head and the shorter pet cut are both painted from your photos.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
