Painting a Border Collie: what we pay attention to

Border Collies are painted for the eye — the fixed, intelligent stare the breed uses on sheep. It comes straight from the photo: a dog watching a ball or a flock, head slightly low, brow tight, is a completely different portrait from a dog looking politely at a camera. We keep the brow and the eyes exactly as the reference has them and let the rest of the painting stay quiet around them.

The black-and-white pattern is drawn at the sketch stage so the blaze, collar and socks sit correctly, then painted as two surfaces: the black as cool colour with warm highlights, the white with grey shadows so it stays in the form. Red-and-whites, chocolates and lilacs are kept warm; merles are mapped and painted through; tricolours get their tan points as warm accents at the brow and cheeks.

Rough coats are painted with layered feathering on the chest, legs and tail; smooth coats with shorter strokes that follow the muscle. A straight-on head study on a plain ground is the intense one; the working crouch on a landscape canvas is the piece for a dog that has sheep.

Border Collie portrait FAQ

Can you capture the herding stare?

That is what most Border Collie owners want, and it comes from the photo. A dog fixed on a ball, a frisbee or sheep — eyes narrowed, head low — paints as intensity. We keep the brow and the eyes exactly as the photo has them.

How do you paint the rough coat and the smooth coat?

The rough coat is painted with feathering on the chest, legs and tail in layers; the smooth coat with shorter strokes that follow the muscle. Both keep the white blaze, collar and socks as cool-shadowed white against the colour.

Do you paint agility or working dogs in motion?

Yes. A dog mid-weave or mid-leap on a landscape canvas is a strong piece. Send a sharp, side-on action photo; motion blur cannot be reconstructed.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
