Painting a Boxer: what we pay attention to
A Boxer’s face is all expression: the lifted brow, the head tilt, the soft, worried eyes above a comically serious muzzle. We paint what your photo shows, and the best Boxer photos are the ones taken a second after you said something interesting — the head goes over, the brow goes up, and that is the portrait.
The short, glossy coat shows the muscle underneath, so the strokes follow it — across the broad chest, along the shoulder, down the straight front legs. Fawns are kept warm from a light tan to a deep red; brindles are mapped as a pattern of stripes first and painted through so they wrap around the body. The black mask is kept a warm dark brown so the face stays a face, and the white markings — blaze, chest, socks — are painted with cool grey shadows so they sit in the form rather than floating on top.
Natural ears fold forward and soften the outline; cropped ears stand up and sharpen it. Either is painted as your dog has them. A standing full body on a landscape canvas shows the square, athletic outline the breed is known for; a head-and-shoulders study on a warm ground is the composition most owners choose.

Boxer portrait FAQ
How do you handle the black mask and the wrinkled brow?
The mask is kept a warm dark brown so it stays part of the face, and the brow wrinkles are painted as small forms with a lit and shaded side rather than lines. The white blaze, if there is one, is painted with cool shadows so it sits in the face.
Do you paint cropped or natural ears?
Whatever your dog has. Natural ears fold forward and frame the face; cropped ears stand up and change the outline. Both are painted from your photo exactly as they are.
Can you paint a white Boxer without it looking flat?
Yes. A white coat is painted with warm and cool greys in the shadows and a slightly darker background so the outline holds. The pink of the nose and any patches are matched from a daylight photo.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
