Painting a Cane Corso: what we pay attention to
The Cane Corso head is the portrait: a broad, flat skull, a pronounced stop, a square muzzle and a neck as thick as the head. We draw it for mass — a viewpoint slightly below eye level helps — and paint the short, coarse coat with strokes that follow the planes of the skull and the muscle of the neck and chest.
Colour in the breed runs from black to formentino, and each is painted as a range rather than a flat colour. Blacks are cool blue-black in the shadow and warm where the light wraps the skull; greys are steel and blue with warm taupe highlights and a sheen along the muscle; fawns are warm with a dark mask that stays brown; brindles are mapped and painted through. Backgrounds are chosen to sit against the coat — warm for greys and blacks, cool for fawns.
The expression is calm, watchful and steady, and it is painted as your photo has it. Cropped ears sharpen the outline; natural ears fold forward and soften it. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a dark ground has the presence this breed carries.

Cane Corso portrait FAQ
How do you paint a grey or blue Corso?
Grey is painted as colour — cool steel and blue in the shadow, warm taupe where the light hits — with a soft sheen along the muscle. A warm ground makes the grey glow.
Cropped or natural ears?
As your dog has them. Cropped ears sharpen the outline; natural ears fold and soften it. Both are painted exactly from the photo.
Will the painting show a guard dog or a family dog?
The dog in your photo. Corsos at home look calm, watchful and devoted, and that is what goes on the canvas.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
