Painting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: what we pay attention to
The Cavalier is a portrait breed by history — it appears in old-master paintings for the same reasons it suits a canvas now: a round, open face, large dark eyes and long, silky ears that frame everything. We paint the eyes at their true size with soft highlights and a warm brown iris visible at the edge, and take care with the eyelids, which is what keeps the expression gentle instead of exaggerated.
The coat is painted as flowing masses with a few silky strands at the edges of the ears and feathering. Blenheims are kept warm — chestnut patches that glow against the white — and we choose a pale, cool background so the colour carries. Tricolours are painted as three surfaces with feathered edges; rubies are kept warm from the ears to the feet; black and tans are painted as a black dog with warm points.
The breed is gentle and it shows: a slight tilt of the head, ears slightly forward, mouth soft. Head-and-shoulders on a portrait canvas is the classic composition; a full body lying down, feathering on the feet showing, is a favourite for memorial pieces.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel portrait FAQ
How do you paint the large eyes without them looking cartoonish?
Cavalier eyes are genuinely large, dark and round, and we paint them at their true size with a soft highlight and a warm brown iris visible at the edge. The trick is the eyelids — painted correctly, the eyes look gentle rather than exaggerated.
Can you include the Blenheim spot on the forehead?
Yes, if your dog has one. The lozenge is drawn in at the sketch stage and painted as part of the chestnut pattern, not added on top.
Do you paint the feathering on the feet and ears?
Yes, in layers of long, soft strokes. The ears in particular are painted as flowing masses with a few silky strands at the edges, so the coat looks soft rather than stringy.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
