Painting a Cocker Spaniel: what we pay attention to
Cocker Spaniels are painted around the ears. Long, low-set and silky, they frame the face from the eyes to below the chin, and we paint them as flowing masses with individual strands only where the light catches an edge. The eyes are large, dark and soft — a Cocker looks at you with its whole heart — and the brow is painted carefully so the expression stays gentle.
Coat colour in the breed runs from a solid golden or black to the complex patterns of roans and partis. Solids are kept in their colour family with sheen placed once, where the light strikes the fall of the coat; roans are built up as a base with the ticking painted over in the direction of the hair, never dotted on; partis have their patches drawn at the sketch stage. Liver dogs have the liver nose and the hazel eye matched from a daylight photo.
English and American Cockers are painted with their own head shapes — the English longer in the muzzle, the American rounder with the heavier coat — so tell us which your dog is. Head-and-shoulders on a pale ground is the classic; a working dog with a retrieve on a landscape canvas suits the field-bred type.

Cocker Spaniel portrait FAQ
English or American Cocker — does it matter?
Tell us which. The English Cocker has a longer head and a less profuse coat; the American has a rounder skull, a shorter muzzle and a heavier coat. Both are painted with the same care for the ears and the eyes.
How do you paint a roan coat?
As a base colour with the ticking painted over it in the direction of the hair — the effect is built up, never dotted on. A sharp daylight photo shows the pattern; in dim light a roan reads as a solid.
Can you paint a working Cocker in the field?
Yes. A landscape composition of a dog in cover, or sitting with a retrieve, suits the working type. Send a side-on photo in even light.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
