On the canvas
Painting a Dachshund: what we pay attention to
The Dachshund’s outline is the portrait. A full-body study in profile on a landscape canvas — long back, deep chest, short legs, tail carried level — is the composition we recommend first, because it shows the breed and fits the canvas instead of fighting it. For a closer study, the long, refined head with its low-set ears sits comfortably on a portrait or square canvas.
The three coat types are painted three ways. Smooth coats get short strokes that follow the muscle and a glossy highlight along the back; long-haired coats are layered like a small setter, with feathering on the ears, chest and tail; wire-haired coats are painted with a broken, dry-brush edge, and the beard and eyebrows are treated as separate masses that give the face its stern, humorous look.
Colour ranges widely in the breed. Reds are kept warm from cream through to deep chestnut; black and tans are painted as two surfaces with feathered edges; dapples are mapped as a pattern first and their blue or partial-blue eyes matched from the photo. The expression — a Dachshund watching you with its chin on the floor — is best captured from a camera at floor level.
Scenes and settings
What do people have us paint a Dachshund doing?
A Dachshund is a long dog with a digging habit and a strong opinion. They burrow into bedding until only a nose shows, they sit up on their haunches to ask for things, and they come in smooth, long and wire coats that paint completely differently.
Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Dachshund alone, or with the people the Dachshund belongs to.
-
Burrowed in a blanket, nose out
A lump of duvet with a single dark nose and two eyes at one end. Painted close on a square canvas; the fabric does most of the work and the small visible face has to be exact.
-
Full length, landscape canvas
The whole dog side-on, which is the only format that respects the proportions. We paint the shoulder, the dip of the back and the set of the short front legs carefully — a Dachshund drawn even slightly too tall stops being one.
-
Digging in the garden
Front half down a hole, back half and tail in the air, soil flying. A comic composition that owners love, and the soil is painted thick and loose against a tight little dog.
-
Sitting up, begging
Balanced on the haunches, front paws tucked, chest exposed. A tall canvas — this is the pose the breed uses to get its way and it is pure silhouette.
-
Coat type, close up
Smooth, long or wire. Smooth is painted as a tight sheen over muscle, long as fringed feathering off the chest and tail, wire as a harsh broken coat with the beard and eyebrows standing proud — three different paintings of the same breed.

Dachshund portrait FAQ
Which canvas shape suits a Dachshund?
Landscape, for a full-body portrait — the long, low outline is the breed, and a portrait canvas fights it. For a head-and-shoulders study, portrait or square works well; the long muzzle and ears fit comfortably.
How do you paint dapple coats?
The dapple pattern is mapped as shapes at the sketch stage, then painted as fur with the lighter patches softly edged. Blue eyes or partial blue eyes on dapples are matched exactly from your photo.
Do you paint the three coat types differently?
Yes. Smooth coats are painted with strokes following the muscle; long coats with layered feathering on the ears, chest and tail; wire coats with a broken, dry-brush edge and the beard and eyebrows as separate masses.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
