Painting a Dalmatian: what we pay attention to
A Dalmatian’s spots are its fingerprint, and we paint them from the photo, not from an idea of the breed. Each spot is drawn at the sketch stage in its place and shape — the spots on the ears, the clusters on the muzzle, the way the pattern thins on the chest — and painted as fur with a soft edge that follows the curve of the body. The proof is where you tell us if one is missing.
The white is painted as colour. Warm creams where the light strikes the skull and shoulder, cool blue-greys in the shadow of the chest and under the ears, and pure white saved for the highlights; the background is chosen a step darker so the outline holds. Painted this way the spots sit on a solid, three-dimensional dog rather than on paper.
The breed has a clean, athletic outline and a keen, slightly aristocratic face. A standing profile on a landscape canvas shows the whole pattern; a three-quarter head-and-shoulders study shows the face and the ears. Liver-spotted Dalmatians are painted warm brown with the amber eye and liver nose from a daylight photo.

Dalmatian portrait FAQ
Will you paint every spot in the right place?
Yes. The spots are drawn at the sketch stage from your photo — owners know their dog's pattern — and painted as fur with soft edges, following the curve of the body. We do not invent or tidy them.
How do you paint the white so it is not flat?
With warm and cool greys in the shadows and a background a step darker than the coat. The spots then read as pattern on a solid, three-dimensional dog rather than as dots on paper.
Do you paint liver-spotted Dalmatians?
Yes. Liver spots are painted warm brown, and the liver nose and amber eye are matched from a daylight photo.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
