Painting a Doberman Pinscher: what we pay attention to
The Doberman is an outline breed: a long, wedge-shaped head, a clean neck, a deep chest and a compact, muscular body. We draw it carefully before painting — the head’s length in relation to the skull, the set of the ears, the angle of the shoulder — and confirm the sketch with you, because owners of this breed notice proportion.
The coat is short and glossy and shows every muscle, so the painting is about sheen and form. The black is built from cool blue-blacks with warm highlights that follow the muscle across the shoulder and thigh; reds are kept warm and glossy; blues and fawns are painted with cool greys and a softer sheen. The rust points — brow, muzzle, chest, legs — are warm and opaque and are what make the face read at a distance.

How do you paint the black-and-rust coat?
The black is painted as cool blue-black with a warm sheen where the light hits the muscle — a Doberman's coat is glossy, and the highlights follow the form. The rust points are warm and opaque and are what make the face read.
Cropped or natural ears?
Whatever your dog has. We paint the ears exactly as they are; both suit the breed's outline.
Can you paint the standing show stance?
Yes. A side-on photo at chest height in even light is all we need. The stance, the tail set and the angulation are measured from the photo at the drawing stage.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
