Painting a Goldendoodle: what we pay attention to
Every Goldendoodle is different, which is why we paint the dog in the photo rather than a breed idea. The coat may be nearly straight, wavy or tightly curled, and we paint whichever it is as masses of light and shadow, with a few individual waves at the edges — the fringe, the ears, the cheek — where they cross the background. A side-lit photo is what lets us see the texture instead of guessing it.
The face is the point of a Doodle portrait: the soft, round muzzle, the dark button nose, the friendly, slightly goofy eyes. The eyes must be visible in the reference — a fringe that covers them in every photo covers them in the painting — so a recently trimmed face is the best reference you can send.
Colour is matched from daylight. Apricots and creams are kept warm with cool shadows; reds and chocolates deep; blacks painted as colour with the waves shown as highlights; partis and merles mapped at the sketch stage. Standards on a landscape canvas, full body, show the long legs and the shaggy outline; a straight-on head-and-shoulders on a pale ground is the composition most owners choose.

Goldendoodle portrait FAQ
How do you handle a coat that is different on every Doodle?
By painting the coat your dog has — flat, wavy or curly — as masses of light and shadow with a few individual waves at the edges. We ask for a side-lit photo so we can see the texture rather than guess it.
My Doodle changes colour after grooming — which do you paint?
Send photos in the coat you like best, and tell us. Fresh-groomed dogs look lighter and neater; a few weeks out they look shaggier and warmer. Both are your dog.
Will the painting show the Golden or the Poodle side more?
Neither — it will show your dog. The head shape and the coat are taken from your photos, not from a breed standard.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
