Painting a Great Dane: what we pay attention to
A Great Dane deserves a large canvas. The head is long and finely chiselled — a flat skull, a deep stop, a square muzzle and loose jowls — and painted close to life size it has the same presence on a wall as the dog has in a doorway. The short, glossy coat shows every plane, so the drawing stage is exact and the sketch is confirmed with you before colour goes on.
Colour is where the breed varies most. Fawns are kept warm with a mask that stays dark brown rather than black; blues are painted with cool steel greys and a soft sheen placed once; brindles are mapped and painted through; harlequins have their black patches drawn in at the sketch so the edges fall correctly, and the white is painted with warm and cool greys so the dog stays solid. Merles and mantles follow the same logic.
The Dane’s expression is gentle and a little sad, and we keep it that way. Natural ears fold neatly forward and soften the outline; cropped ears stand and sharpen it. A standing profile on a big landscape canvas is the statement piece; a three-quarter head study is the portrait most owners choose.

Great Dane portrait FAQ
What size canvas suits a Great Dane?
Larger than average. Owners often want the dog painted close to life size at the head, which means 24 × 36 in or larger for a head-and-shoulders study. A standing profile on a big landscape canvas is a statement piece for a hallway.
How do you paint the harlequin pattern?
The black patches are drawn at the sketch stage so their edges fall correctly, then painted as fur with soft edges against the white. The white is painted with warm and cool greys in the shadows so the dog keeps its volume.
Do you paint blue and fawn Danes with the same approach?
Blues are painted with cool steel greys and a soft sheen; fawns are kept warm with a dark mask that stays brown rather than black. Both show every plane of the head, so the drawing has to be exact.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
