Painting a Havanese: what we pay attention to
A Havanese is painted around a soft, clear face. The eyes are large, dark and gentle, the nose is small and dark, and the silky coat frames them; we paint the face first, so it sits correctly under the hair, and then build the coat as flowing masses with a few waves drawn where the light catches an edge — the fringe, the dropped ears, the cheeks.
Colour varies more in this breed than almost any other, and often changes with age: whites and creams painted with warm and cool greys in the shadows, golds and sables kept warm with darker tips at the edges, chocolates and blacks painted as colour with side light showing the waves, partis and brindles mapped at the sketch stage. Tell us which version of your dog you want on the canvas.
At near life size on a small canvas, the head fills the frame and the dog becomes a portrait sitter. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a pale, cool ground is the composition most owners choose; dogs in a puppy cut are painted in that cut.

Havanese portrait FAQ
How do you paint the silky, wavy coat?
As flowing masses with a few waves drawn where the light catches an edge — the fringe, the ears, the cheeks. The face is painted first so the eyes and nose sit correctly under the hair.
My Havanese changes colour — which do you paint?
The colour in the photo you send, taken in daylight. Many Havanese lighten or "silver" with age; tell us if you want an earlier colour and send a photo from then.
Do you paint the puppy cut?
Yes. It shows the round head and the sweet expression directly and is painted with softer, shorter strokes.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
