Painting a Jack Russell Terrier: what we pay attention to
A Jack Russell is a bright, keen face on a compact white body, and the portrait depends on getting the expression: the tilted head, the dark, intense eyes, the ears half-folded in attention. We paint the eyes with a sharp catchlight and take care with the brow so the look is alert rather than startled.
White coats are painted with colour in the shadows — warm and cool greys, a little blue in the shade under the chin — so the dog keeps its volume, and we choose a background a step darker so the outline holds without a hard edge. The tan and black patches are drawn at the sketch stage so they fall correctly on the skull and body; on rough-coated dogs the beard and eyebrows are painted as separate masses with a dry-brush edge.
The breed is all energy, and many owners want an action piece — a leap, a dig, a stand-off with a ball — on a landscape canvas. A three-quarter head-and-shoulders study on a warm ground is the composition that suits most photos.

How do you paint a mostly white dog?
