Painting a Miniature Schnauzer: what we pay attention to
A Schnauzer’s face is a beard and a pair of eyebrows with a serious dog behind them. We paint the beard and the brows as separate masses from the body coat, with a few coarse individual hairs drawn at the edges so they read as wire, and take care that the dark eyes are visible under the eyebrows — a low camera angle in the photo helps.
The body coat is painted with a broken, dry-brush edge, which is what makes wire look like wire rather than fluff. Salt and pepper is painted as banded hair — each stroke carrying a light and a dark end — so the coat shimmers instead of going flat grey; black and silver dogs are painted as a black coat with the silver furnishings kept cool; solid blacks need side light in the photo so the texture shows.
The breed is alert, square and slightly pompous in the best way, and a three-quarter head study on a warm ground captures it. A standing profile on a landscape canvas suits a dog in a full show trim. Standards and Giants are painted the same way at their own proportions.

Miniature Schnauzer portrait FAQ
How do you paint the wiry coat and the beard?
The body coat is painted with a broken, dry-brush edge so it reads as wire rather than fluff. The beard and eyebrows are painted as separate masses with a few coarse hairs drawn at the edges — they are what make the face.
How does salt and pepper come out in oil?
As banded hair: each stroke carries a light and a dark end so the coat shimmers rather than reading as flat grey. The lighter furnishings on the legs and beard are painted warmer.
Do you paint Standard and Giant Schnauzers?
Yes, with the same approach and the proportions from your photo. Tell us which size your dog is.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
