On the canvas
Painting a Newfoundland: what we pay attention to
A Newfoundland needs a large canvas and a painter who will take the coat seriously. The heavy, long coat is painted in layers from a soft dark mass outward, with the outer hair shown as highlights along the top of each mass and the fuller hair of the chest and britches added last where it catches the light. Black Newfies are painted as colour — cool blue-blacks in the shadow, warmer browns where the light wraps the skull — against a background a step lighter, so the outline holds.
The head is massive and the expression is famously gentle: soft, deep-set eyes, a broad muzzle, a slightly sad brow. Painted at the scale the head has in life — a 24 × 30 in canvas or larger for head-and-shoulders — the portrait has the same presence the dog has in a room. Browns and greys are painted warm and cool respectively; Landseers have their black patches drawn at the sketch stage.
A three-quarter head-and-shoulders study on a cool ground is the classic; a full body lying down on a landscape canvas shows the whole dog, which for this breed is a lot of dog.

Newfoundland portrait FAQ
How do you paint a black, long-coated giant?
In layers, as colour: cool blue-blacks in the shadow, warmer browns where the light wraps the skull and shoulder, with the long outer coat shown as highlights along the top of each mass. A background a step lighter keeps the outline.
What canvas size suits a Newfoundland?
Large. A head-and-shoulders study at 24 × 30 in or bigger gives the head the mass it has in life; many owners go larger still for a full body.
Do you paint the Landseer pattern?
Yes. The black patches on the white are drawn at the sketch stage and painted as fur with soft edges; the white is painted with warm and cool greys so the dog stays solid.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
