Painting a Rottweiler: what we pay attention to
A Rottweiler is a black dog with a warm face, and the painting has to keep both true. The black coat is built from cool, blue-black darks in the shadows and warmer brown-blacks where the light wraps over the skull, cheeks and shoulder, with highlights placed along the direction of the short, dense fur. Against that, the rust markings on the brow, muzzle, chest and legs are painted warm and opaque so the face reads instantly.
The head is broad and heavy, and the portrait needs that weight. We usually recommend a viewpoint slightly below eye level and a composition that includes the deep chest, so the dog has the presence it has in a room. The eyes are almond-shaped and dark, and the breed’s steady, thoughtful expression comes from the brow rather than the mouth.
Backgrounds for black dogs are chosen a step lighter than the coat — a warm grey or a muted green — so the outline of the head holds without a hard edge. Rottweilers are often painted at the Refined level; the short coat and strong planes suit it.

Rottweiler portrait FAQ
How do you stop a black dog from disappearing into the painting?
The coat is painted as colour — cool blue-blacks in the shadow, warmer brown-blacks where the light hits — with highlights following the fur direction over the skull and shoulder. The background is chosen a step lighter so the outline holds.
Will the rust markings come out the right colour?
Yes. The markings run from a deep mahogany to a lighter rust depending on the dog, and we match them from a daylight photo. They are painted warm and opaque against the cool black so the face reads at once.
Can you paint a Rottweiler looking gentle rather than intimidating?
We paint the dog in your photo. Most Rottweilers photographed at home by their owners look exactly what they are — calm and attentive — and that is what goes on the canvas.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
