Painting a Samoyed: what we pay attention to
A Samoyed is a white dog painted in colour. The coat is built from warm creams and cool blue-greys — warm where the light strikes the top of the head and the shoulder, cool in the shadow of the ruff and under the chin — with pure white kept for the few highlights that matter. The stand-off texture is shown with radiating strokes at the edge of each mass, so the coat reads as a cloud of fine hair rather than a solid shape.
The face is the “Sammy smile”: upturned mouth corners, black lips, dark almond eyes and a black nose against all that white. We paint those dark features crisply, because they are what makes the face read at a distance, and we keep the expression exactly as your photo has it.
Backgrounds are chosen a step darker than the coat — a cool grey-blue, a soft green, or a snow field with a darker sky — so the outline holds without a hard edge. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a cool ground is the portrait; a standing dog in snow on a landscape canvas is the breed at home.

How do you paint a white dog on a canvas?
With colour. A white coat is painted in warm creams and cool blue-greys with pure white saved for the highlights, and the background is chosen a step darker so the outline holds. The stand-off texture is shown with radiating strokes at the edge of the mass.
Will the smile come through?
Yes — the upturned mouth corners and the dark eyes are the likeness, and we paint them exactly as your photo has them. Keep the mouth closed or slightly open; both are the Sammy smile.
Do you paint the black lips, nose and eye rims?
Yes. The dark pigment against the white coat is what makes the face read, and it is painted crisply.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
