Painting a Siberian Husky: what we pay attention to
A Husky’s face is a design: a symmetrical mask of black, grey or red over white, erect ears, and eyes that are often ice-blue. We draw the mask at the sketch stage so it sits symmetrically on the skull, then paint the coat from the dense undercoat outward, adding the longer guard hairs and the fuller fur of the ruff and cheeks in layers where the light catches them.
The eyes are painted as glass: a translucent layer of cool blue over a lighter base, a dark pupil at the size your photo shows, and a single sharp catchlight. Brown, amber, bi-eyed and parti-eyed dogs are matched exactly. Under a straight-on composition — which suits this breed because the mask is symmetrical — the eyes carry the whole painting.
Huskies suit cool backgrounds: a snow field kept simple, a blue-grey ground, or the white of a winter sky. Red-and-white dogs are kept warm against those cool tones; agoutis and greys are painted with the banded tips of the guard hairs visible at the edges. A running study on a landscape canvas is a piece sled-dog owners often ask for.

Siberian Husky portrait FAQ
How do you paint blue Husky eyes?
As glass. The iris is painted as a translucent layer of cool blue over a lighter base, with a dark pupil and a single sharp catchlight. Bi-eyed and parti-eyed dogs are matched exactly from your photo.
How do you paint the thick coat?
From the undercoat out: a soft, dense mass first, then the guard hairs of the outer coat in longer strokes, and the ruff and tail plume built up in layers where they catch the light. The mask markings on the face are drawn at the sketch stage so they sit symmetrically.
Can you paint a Husky in a snow scene?
Yes. A landscape canvas with the dog standing or running on snow, kept simple, is a classic for the breed. The cool ground makes the mask and the eyes read strongly.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
