Painting a Staffordshire Bull Terrier: what we pay attention to
The Staffy head is broad and full of shape — pronounced cheek muscles, a short foreface, rose ears, a wide smile — and the short coat shows all of it. We draw the head carefully for width and paint the planes with strokes that follow the muscle, so the dog has the solidity it has in life. A viewpoint slightly below eye level gives the head its weight.
Brindles are the most common coat and are mapped as a pattern at the sketch stage so the stripes wrap around the cheeks and shoulders rather than sitting flat. Reds and fawns are kept warm; blues are painted with cool steel greys and a soft sheen; blacks as colour with warm highlights; whites and pieds with grey shadows so they keep their form. Eye colour — often lighter on blues — is matched from a daylight photo.
