Painting a Weimaraner: what we pay attention to
The Weimaraner is a study in one colour, and the painting works when that one colour is painted as many: cool blues in the shadow of the chest and under the ears, warm taupes and silvers where the light strikes the skull and the shoulder, and a sheen placed once along the muscle. A warm background — a muted ochre or a soft brown — makes the grey glow.
The eyes are the other subject. Amber, grey or blue-grey, they are unusual enough that owners look for them first, and we match them from a daylight photo and paint the iris as a translucent layer so they read as glass. The long, velvety ears frame the face and are painted with soft edges that turn away from the light.
The breed is athletic and elegant, and a standing profile on a landscape canvas shows it; a three-quarter head study with the ears and the eyes is the portrait most owners choose. Long-haired Weimaraners are painted with layered feathering on the ears, legs and tail.

Weimaraner portrait FAQ
How do you paint a grey dog so it is not flat?
Grey is painted as colour — cool blues in the shadow, warm taupes where the light hits — with a sheen placed once along the muscle. A warm background makes the silver glow.
Will the eyes come out the right colour?
Yes. Weimaraner eyes are amber, grey or blue-grey and are matched from a daylight photo, painted with the iris as a translucent layer so they look like glass, not paint.
Do you paint the long-haired Weimaraner?
Yes, with feathering on the ears, legs and tail painted in soft layers. Tell us which type your dog is.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
