Painting a Whippet: what we pay attention to
A Whippet is painted as form. The coat is so fine that the painting is really about what is underneath — the long muscles of the neck and thigh, the deep chest, the visible ribs, the tuck-up — and about the soft sheen where the light strikes the skin. Side light in the photo is what shows this; flat light turns the dog into a paper cut-out.
The head is long and narrow with a gentle, slightly anxious expression, and the eyes are large and dark. In profile the outline of the breed is a curve from the ears to the tail, and a standing full body on a landscape canvas shows it. The curled-up sleeping pose — a Whippet folded on a cushion, painted from above on a square canvas — is one of the most-requested compositions we do.
Colour is matched from daylight: fawns kept warm, blues painted with cool steel greys and a soft sheen, brindles mapped and painted through, whites with warm and cool greys in the shadows. A house coat or a sighthound collar can be included if it is part of how your dog looks.

How do you paint such a fine coat?
As skin with a sheen. The coat is so short that the painting is really about the muscle and bone underneath — the ribcage, the tuck-up, the long muscles of the thigh — with a soft highlight where the light strikes the form.
Do you paint the curled-up sleeping pose?
Yes, and it is one of the most-requested compositions for the breed. A Whippet curled on a cushion, painted from above, fills a square canvas beautifully.
Can you paint my Whippet with its coat and collar?
Yes — a house coat, a martingale or a sighthound collar are painted from your photo if you want them in.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
