Painting a Donkey: what we pay attention to

A donkey is painted around its ears and its eyes. The ears are drawn at full length at the sketch stage — they are the outline of the portrait — and painted with light through the thin edges and the darker rims; the eyes are large, dark and gentle, with a soft catchlight, and the pale muzzle and eye rings frame them. A straight-on photo at eye level with the ears up is the reference that makes the portrait.

The coat is dense and slightly coarse and is painted as a soft mass with the direction shown through gentle highlights; the short upright mane is painted in short strokes. Greys are painted as colour — warm and cool greys — with the dorsal stripe and the shoulder cross drawn at the sketch if the composition shows them; browns and blacks as colour; whites and spotteds with the pattern mapped.

The expression of a donkey — patient, thoughtful, a little sad — is kept as your photo has it. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a soft ground is the piece; a head over a gate is the farm portrait; miniature donkeys and mules are painted from the animal in front of us.

Scenes and settings

What do people have us paint a Donkey doing?

Donkeys are kept in pairs and grieve if separated, which is why they are so often painted in twos. The ears are enormous, the coat is thick and shaggy in winter, and most have a dark cross running over the shoulders and down the spine.

Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Donkey alone, or with the people the Donkey belongs to.

  • The ears

Head-on, both ears at full height, enormous relative to the head. Painted with light through the thin ear so the inside glows and the edge stays soft.

  • The cross over the shoulders

The dark dorsal stripe meeting the shoulder bar. Painted as a soft-edged shading in the coat rather than a drawn line, because that is how it actually sits.

  • Two standing head to tail

A pair in a field, each resting its head over the other’s back. The most honest portrait of the species, since they are rarely alone.

  • The muzzle, close up

Tight crop on a pale grey muzzle, soft, whiskered, eyes just above. Painted with the muzzle hair very short and velvety against the shaggier coat behind it.

  • In the winter coat

Thick, shaggy, mud on the legs, standing in rain. Painted as a long broken coat holding water, which is the version of a donkey that most people actually see.

Donkey portrait FAQ

How do you paint the long ears?

As the outline of the portrait — drawn at full length at the sketch stage, painted with light through the thin edges and the darker rims, and given headroom on the canvas.

Will you paint the cross on the back?

Yes, if a full-body composition shows it — the dorsal stripe and the shoulder cross are part of a grey donkey and are drawn at the sketch.

Do you paint mules and miniature donkeys?

Yes, from the animal in your photo, with the head, the ears and the outline drawn as they are.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
