Painting a Goat: what we pay attention to
Goats are painted for their faces, which are unlike any other animal’s: horizontal pupils in a pale iris, a beard on many, ears that stand up or hang down to the jaw depending on the breed, and an expression that is always slightly amused. We paint the eyes exactly from a daylight photo — a goat with round pupils becomes a sheep — and draw the ears and the profile at the sketch stage for the breed.
Coats are painted by type: short coats with strokes following the form; Angoras with the ringlets massed and a few drawn at the edges; long-haired breeds in layers. Colour patterns — the Boer’s red head on a white body, the patches on a Nubian, the spots on a Nigerian Dwarf — are mapped at the sketch. Horns are drawn for their curve and painted as ridged horn.
A straight-on head-and-shoulders study is the classic; a goat standing on a rock or a stump on a landscape canvas shows the character; a kid, or a pair of kids, painted larger than life makes a charming small piece. Goat portraits are ordered as decor by designers and shops as well as by owners.
Scenes and settings
What do people have us paint a Goat doing?
A goat will be on top of anything it can climb, and the eye — with its horizontal rectangular pupil — is unlike anything else we paint. Horns, beard and profile vary enormously between breeds and between individuals.
Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Goat alone, or with the people the Goat belongs to.
-
On top of something it should not be
A wall, a car roof, a shed, a hay bale, entirely pleased. A tall composition with the goat high and the structure accurate, because the specific thing it climbed is the joke.
-
The rectangular pupil
Very tight crop on the eye, where the pupil is a horizontal slot in a pale iris. Painted exactly as it is — it is the strangest and most memorable detail in farm-animal painting.
-
The horns
Profile or three-quarter, where the sweep and the growth ridges show. Painted as a hard ringed surface with the rings followed accurately, which is what gives a horn its age.
-
A kid
Days old, legs too long, ears sideways. Painted soft and loose; the awkwardness is the whole appeal and tightening it up removes it.
-
The beard and the profile
Side-on, straight or roman nose, beard hanging, lower lip loose. An unexpectedly dignified portrait, and the profile is where a goat’s character actually lives.

Goat portrait FAQ
Will you paint the strange eyes?
Yes — the horizontal pupil and the pale iris are the goat, and we paint them exactly from a daylight photo. Painted with a round pupil, a goat looks like a sheep.
Do you paint Nubians with the long ears and the Roman nose?
Yes. Breed features — the Nubian's ears and profile, the Boer's red head, the Angora's ringlets, the pygmy's stocky build — are drawn from your photo.
Can you paint a pet goat as a decor piece?
Yes. Goat portraits, like highland cows, are ordered as decor by designers and gift shops; the same trade terms apply.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
