Painting a Highland Cow: what we pay attention to
The highland cow has become a modern classic on the wall — a head study of a red coo with its fringe over its eyes hangs over sofas from Edinburgh to Dubai — and we paint it both as decor and as a portrait of a particular animal. The coat is painted in sweeping, layered strokes from the undercoat up, with the fringe painted last in long, loaded strokes that fall over the eyes, and individual hairs drawn only at the edges of the fringe and the ears.
The horns are drawn carefully at the sketch stage — their spread, curve and colour are the individual — and painted as smooth, pale horn with a darker tip. The nose is the one wet, dark point in all that hair and carries the single thickest highlight on the canvas; the eyes, if the fringe allows them to be seen, are gentle and dark.
Reds and gingers are painted warm from cream to deep russet; blacks as colour with the fringe catching light; duns, brindles and whites matched from a daylight photo. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a misty ground is the piece; a full body standing in a field on a landscape canvas is the farm portrait. Interior designers and gift shops order the decor version at trade pricing from one piece.
Scenes and settings
What do people have us paint a Highland Cow doing?
The most painted cow in the world, and for good reason — a long ginger coat, a fringe over the eyes and a wide sweep of horn. The difficulty is that the fringe hides the eyes, so the whole portrait depends on finding them inside it.
Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Highland Cow alone, or with the people the Highland Cow belongs to.
-
The fringe
Head-on, hair hanging over the face, one eye just visible behind it. Painted as separated hanging locks with the eye found deep inside — a fringe painted as a mass makes a blank animal, and that is how most Highland paintings fail.
-
The horns
Wide sweep either side of the head, ringed and tipped dark. Painted as a hard polished surface against the softest coat we paint, which is the contrast the whole image is built on.
-
In heather and mist
Standing on rough ground with the distance soft and cold. Painted with the ginger coat as the only warm note in a cool landscape, which is why this picture works on a wall.
-
The calf
Small, very woolly, close to the mother’s flank. Painted loose; the calf’s coat is softer and shorter and the two textures beside each other are the point.
-
Full body, winter coat
Side-on with the coat at full length, almost reaching the ground. A wide landscape canvas where the coat is painted in long hanging strands with air and ground showing through at the hem.

Highland Cow portrait FAQ
Do you paint highland cows as decor, without a specific animal?
Yes. The highland cow head study is one of the most popular decor pieces we make for interior designers, gift shops and Etsy sellers — painted from reference photos you choose or we supply, in sizes and palettes to suit the room. Trade pricing from one piece.
How do you paint the long coat?
In sweeping, layered strokes from the undercoat up, with the fringe painted last in long, loaded strokes that fall over the eyes. Individual hairs are drawn at the edges of the fringe and the ears.
Can you paint my own cow?
Yes — farmers, smallholders and fold owners commission portraits of their own animals, and we paint the individual: the set of the horns, the colour, the particular curl of the fringe.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
