Painting a Andalusian: what we pay attention to
The Andalusian is a baroque horse and is painted like one: a strong, arched neck, a compact, powerful body, a noble head with a straight or slightly convex profile, and a mane and tail long enough to be half the portrait. We draw the neck and the head from your photo at the sketch stage and paint the mane in long, loaded strokes that follow its waves, with a few individual strands drawn where the light catches the edge.
Greys — the breed’s most common colour — are painted as soft-edged dapples over a warm ground with the dark skin showing through at the muzzle and around the eyes; older greys that have gone white as a warm white with cool shadows. Bays and blacks are painted as colour with a sheen placed once along the neck; buckskins as a warm tan-gold with black points.
A head-and-neck study with the mane falling over the crest is the portrait most owners choose; a collected trot or piaffe on a landscape canvas shows the movement the breed is bred for. Lusitanos are painted the same way with their own profile.

How do you paint the long, wavy mane?
In long, loaded strokes that follow the waves, with a few individual strands where the light catches the edge. Painted hair by hair the mane goes dead; painted as movement it looks like the breed.
Do you paint Lusitanos too?
Yes, with the same approach and the horse's own profile — Lusitanos often carry a more convex head — drawn from your photo.
Can you paint a grey that has gone white with age?
Yes. An older grey is painted as a warm white with cool shadows and the dark skin still showing at the muzzle and around the eyes.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
