Painting a Arabian Horse: what we pay attention to
The Arabian is the most demanding horse we paint, because its owners know the breed standard intimately. The dished profile, the large, dark, low-set eye, the small tipped ears, the fine muzzle that would fit in a teacup, the arched neck and the high tail carriage are measured from your photo at the drawing stage, and the sketch is confirmed with you before any paint goes down.
The coat is fine and silky with a high sheen, and the skin underneath is thin enough to show the veins on a fit horse — we paint that, with the sheen placed once where the light strikes the neck and the shoulder. Greys are painted as a pattern of soft-edged dapples over a warm ground with the dark skin showing through at the muzzle and around the eyes; bays and chestnuts are kept warm with sharp, cool highlights; blacks as colour, never as a flat dark.
Arabian portraits are a specialty for our clients in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia — private owners, stud farms, corporate and VIP gifts — and the head-and-neck study on a dark, quiet ground is the composition most often requested for a majlis or an office. A standing profile on a landscape canvas is the breeders’ piece.
Scenes and settings
What do people have us paint a Arabian Horse doing?
A dished face, a very large eye, fine skin and a tail carried high. Arabians are hot, alert and almost always photographed with the head up and the nostrils open, which is the pose the whole breed is drawn around.
Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Arabian Horse alone, or with the people the Arabian Horse belongs to.
-
The dished profile
Head in strict profile, the concave face, the small muzzle, the wide jowl. Painted in profile because that is where the breed exists — the dish is a specific curve and getting it slightly wrong produces a different horse.
-
Tail up, at liberty
Trotting loose with the tail carried like a flag and the neck high. A wide landscape canvas with the ground loose so the carriage reads.
-
The eye and the nostril
Close crop on a very large dark eye and a flared nostril, fine skin showing the veins beneath. Painted with the vein structure visible, which is what makes an Arabian head look thin-skinned rather than merely narrow.
-
Against sand and sky
A simple two-band background with the horse as the only detail. Painted hot and bright, with the shadow under the belly carrying almost all the colour.
-
Greying out
A horse that was bay or chestnut and is going white with age. If you have photographs from both ends of that, a pair of canvases of the same horse is a strong hang.

Arabian Horse portrait FAQ
Can you paint an Arabian for a client in the UAE, Qatar or Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Arabian horse portraits are a specialty for Gulf clients — private owners, stables, corporate gifts — painted from the owner's photos and shipped direct, with tracking. Head-and-neck studies on a dark ground are the most requested composition.
How do you paint a grey Arabian?
As a pattern of soft-edged dapples over a warm ground, with the dark skin showing through at the muzzle, around the eyes and inside the ears, and a cool sheen where the light strikes the neck. Flea-bitten greys have the ticking painted over a pale base.
Will the profile be right?
Yes. The dish, the width between the eyes, the small tipped ears and the fine muzzle are measured from your photo at the drawing stage and confirmed with you on a sketch before painting — Arabian owners know the standard, and so do we.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
