Painting a Friesian: what we pay attention to
The Friesian is a black horse painted in colour. The coat is built from cool blue-blacks in the shadow of the chest and under the mane, warm brown-blacks where the light wraps the arched neck and the hindquarter, and a single sharp, cool sheen along the muscle where the light strikes. A ground a step lighter — a grey sky, a pale arena, a soft ochre — keeps the outline without a hard edge. Bright, soft daylight in the photo is what makes this possible.
The mane and tail are the breed’s glory and are painted in long, loaded strokes with a few individual strands drawn where they catch the light — never hair by hair, which kills the movement. The feather on the legs is painted as soft masses with a broken edge. The head is noble and slightly convex in profile, with small ears and a kind, dark eye.
A head-and-neck study with the mane falling over the crest is the portrait most owners choose; a trotting profile on a landscape canvas at the moment of suspension is the piece that shows the breed’s action. Harness and saddle are painted if you want them.
Scenes and settings
What do people have us paint a Friesian doing?
Black, heavily feathered, with a mane and tail left long and a knee action that lifts. Friesians are photographed moving more than standing, because the movement is what the breed is for.
Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Friesian alone, or with the people the Friesian belongs to.
-
Mane flying at the trot
Full extension, mane lifted off the crest, feather spreading at the fetlock. A wide landscape canvas; the hair is painted as heavy separated locks with the direction of travel in all of it.
-
The feathered legs
Close composition from the knee down, long hair over the hoof, moving. Feather is painted in strands with the leg found underneath, so it does not become a cuff.
-
Black in low light
A black horse at dusk or in an indoor school, where the coat shows blue and brown instead of black. Painted as the colours actually there, which is the only way a black horse gets form.
-
The arched neck, head on
Neck high and curved, forelock falling, a lot of mane. Painted on a tall canvas where the crest and the mane make the whole shape.
-
In harness
Put to a carriage in traditional turnout. The harness is painted accurately and the brass against black is the one bright note in the picture.

Friesian portrait FAQ
How do you paint a black horse so it is not a black shape?
As colour: cool blue-blacks in the shadow, warm brown-blacks where the light wraps the neck and the hindquarter, and a sharp, cool sheen placed once along the muscle. A background a step lighter — a grey sky, a pale arena — keeps the outline.
Can you paint the full mane and the feather?
Yes. The mane is painted in long, loaded strokes with a few individual strands where it catches the light; the feather on the legs as soft masses with a broken edge. Both are what Friesian owners want to see.
Do you paint Friesians in harness or under saddle?
Yes — carriage harness, a dressage saddle and rider, or plain. Tell us what to include.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
