Painting a Warmblood: what we pay attention to
Warmbloods are painted as sport horses: a long neck set high, a sloping shoulder, a strong back and powerful hindquarters, drawn from your photo at the sketch stage so the conformation is your horse’s and not a generic one. Owners of dressage horses and show jumpers see a wrong hind leg or a soft topline at once, and the sketch is confirmed with you before painting.
Competition pieces — a collected trot, a passage, a bascule over a fence, with the rider — are painted from a sharp action frame, ideally from a show photographer, with the plaits, the tack and the arena as you want them. The rider’s face can be a likeness or kept general. Standing profiles are painted plaited or plain.
Bays are warm mahogany with black points and cool sheen; chestnuts from copper to liver; greys as soft-edged dapples with dark skin at the muzzle; blacks as colour. The mane and tail are painted in long, loaded strokes. Dutch, Hanoverian, Holsteiner, Oldenburg and every other Warmblood registry are painted from the horse in front of us.

Warmblood portrait FAQ
Can you paint my horse competing, with me riding?
Yes. Dressage, show jumping and eventing photographs — with the rider — are painted from your photos, including the tack, the plaits and the arena. Tell us whether the rider's face should be a likeness or kept general.
Which Warmblood breeds do you paint?
All of them — Dutch, Hanoverian, Holsteiner, Oldenburg, Westphalian, Danish, Swedish and the rest — because we paint the horse in the photo, not a breed idea. Tell us the breed and we note the brand if it is visible.
How do you paint a horse mid-movement?
From a sharp action frame. The moment of suspension in a trot or the bascule over a fence is drawn carefully for the leg positions, then painted with the same attention to muscle and sheen as a standing portrait.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
