Painting a Quarter Horse: what we pay attention to

Quarter Horses are painted for power. The heavily muscled hindquarters, the deep chest, the short, refined head with its small muzzle and wide-set eyes are drawn from your photo at the sketch stage — a side-on conformation photo shows the hindquarters best — and the short, dense coat is painted with strokes that follow the muscle, so the horse looks as solid on the canvas as it does in the arena.

Colour in the breed runs wide. Sorrels and chestnuts are kept warm from copper to red; bays as warm mahogany with black points; palominos as a warm gold with a cream mane and tail; buckskins as tan-gold with black points and a dorsal stripe; duns with their primitive markings painted exactly; roans with the white hairs painted over the base as a soft frosting; greys as soft dapples. All are matched from a daylight photo.

Western tack — a silver-mounted headstall, a saddle, a rider in chaps — is painted from your photos if you want it; many owners prefer the horse plain. A standing profile on a landscape canvas is the breed piece; a cutting or reining study shows the horse at work.

Quarter Horse portrait FAQ

Can you paint my horse in Western tack?

Yes. A headstall, a saddle, a rider — anything in your photos. Silver-mounted tack and a rider's chaps and hat are painted with the same care as the horse.

How do you paint a palomino or a buckskin?

Palominos as a warm gold with a cream mane and tail, with cool highlights on the sheen; buckskins as a tan-gold with black points and a dorsal stripe if the horse has one. Both are matched from a daylight photo.

Do you paint roans and duns?

Yes. Roans have the white hairs painted over the base colour as a soft frosting, never dotted; duns get their dorsal stripe, leg barring and darker face painted exactly as your horse shows them.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
