Painting a Chinchilla: what we pay attention to
A chinchilla is painted as pure velvet. The fur is so dense that individual hairs are not the point; the painting is a soft, deep mass with the form shown through very gentle gradations of tone, and the edges kept soft where the fur meets the background. A hard outline anywhere kills the softness at once, so the ground is chosen a step darker and the transition is feathered.
Standard grey is painted as colour — cool blue-greys in the shadow, warm silver where the light strikes the top of the head and the back, the belly a warm off-white; beiges, violets, sapphires and ebonies are matched from a daylight photo. The large round ears are painted thin, with light through the edges; the big dark eyes with a soft catchlight; the whiskers as long, fine strokes against the ground.
A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a square canvas shows the ears and the eyes; a full body sitting up with the bushy tail curled shows the whole animal. A chinchilla held in the owner’s hands gives it scale and is a composition many owners choose.

Chinchilla portrait FAQ
How do you paint fur that dense?
As velvet — a soft, deep mass with almost no visible hairs and the form shown through very gentle gradations. The edges are kept soft where the fur meets the background; a hard outline kills the softness at once.
Will the grey look like colour?
Yes. Standard grey is painted as cool blue-greys in the shadow and warm silver where the light strikes, with the pale belly warm. Beiges, violets and sapphires are matched from a daylight photo.
Can you paint the chinchilla in my hand?
Yes. A chinchilla held in the owner's hands is a common composition and gives the animal scale.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
